Brad Lillie (our in house financial guy) and I have been crunching the numbers for the last two calendar years and though we have made progress financially (after the disastrous 2008 season, we made a reasonable profit in 2009) changes must be made for us to maintain a competitive edge. Other than bidding out and [...]
The temperature has reached nearly 90 degrees – which for us is hot! Surprisingly it hasn’t rained here for nearly 3 weeks, so after a much wetter than normal May and June – it is really dry. As recently as July 3rd, our breeder flock was producing over 7,000 eggs a day. Now just 10 [...]
Our 1 Millionth chick (held by Juan Zamora) We’ve passed the one million mark in pheasant chicks produced this season. On June 22nd the one millionth chick was hatched and shipped! We still are collecting eggs and it is very busy. On another note – we have been working on improving our pheasant.com website – [...]
Brian Klein with a second fox I copied this narrative directly from Brian Klein’s Facebook Page: “After the excitement of shooting the fox on Thursday night, my enthusiasm was crushed Saturday morning with a phone call stating something got into our pens again and killed another 170 birds. During a stake out last night I [...]
It’s Sunday afternoon and I’m thinking about the upcoming week. We want to get a better handle on the number of adult birds we have sold for this fall. The market is so competitive. Even though are our feed prices are up $100 a ton vs. three years ago, bird prices aren’t up much at [...]
Above is a picture of our Tye drill – we use this to plant our cover crop in our pheasant and partridge pens. We only use this piece of equipment a few weeks out of each year, the rest of the year it sits in the shed. If anything on this Tye drill breaks, it’s [...]

Our new season is upon us. We collected 16,000+ eggs yesterday, we’ve started 20,000 pheasant chicks and the pen crew is mowing and rotovating pens – in preparation for the new season. At the same time we are delivering lots of mature pheasants to preserves – the hunting season is ending on an upswing. Next [...]
I have mixed feelings today. I am relieved the seminar is over, but at the same time it’s been such an exciting week, I have some feelings of kind of a let down. The pic to the left is from our opening night dinner this past Sunday night at Prime Quarter – a local grill [...]
My father was Donald James MacFarlane. He was born on July 3rd, 1903 in the same farmhouse his father (William Daniel MacFarlane) was born in 30 years earlier. The farmhouse is about 10 miles east of Janesville, where my great grandfather emigrated from Scotland in 1849. My father went to school in Janesville, and then [...]
The days are rapidly getting longer and yet there doesn’t seem to be enough time to get everything done. Many of our employees are starting at or before the crack of dawn. Today we had 15 employees start their day with us at 5:00 am. We had a big day – we wanted to vaccinate [...]
